New Delhi, August 29, 2020: In the honour of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, India celebrates his birthday on August 29 as the National Sports Day every year. On the day, the President of India confers prominent sports personalities elite awards such as Khel Ratna, Arjuna Awards, Dronacharya Awards, and Dhyan Chand Award.

Remembering Major Dhyan Chand

India is a place where every Indian celebrates the achievements of outstanding sportspersons such as Sachin Tendulkar, PV Sindhu, Sania Mirza, and so on, but Major Dhyan Chand finds a unique place in the hearts of every Indian.

Chairman of Dalmia Group, Sanjay Dalmia says, “He was very different, he was a hockey wizard. With over 400 goals, he was instrumental in making it possible, winning Olympics Gold Medal consecutively thrice — 1928, 1932, and 1936.”

Our athletes, our pride

Time and again, Indian sportspersons have made the fellow countrymen proud of their exemplary performances. “Indian sportspersons are our heritage. Major Dhyan Chand was a hockey wizard, Sachin Tendulkar is the god of cricket, Milkha Singh is the ‘Flying Sikh’, we have so much talent, we need to recognise, preserve and promote it,” says Dalmia.

Their talent is such that Indian movie makers have been paying tributes to such personalities by making movies on their exceptional life stories. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mary Kom, Dangal, and Paan Singh Tomar are few of the many such examples.

Promoting traditional sports

While India has been displaying its talent on global platforms such as the Olympics and Asian Games, our traditional sports are also gaining worldwide recognition recently. “Mallakhamb which is basically an art that showcases the combination of acrobatics and strength is gaining prominence. There are several such indigenous sports that we need to preserve and promote,” says Sanjay Dalmia.

Sports and fitness

While National Sports Day is celebrated to recognise and honour our sports talent, it also helps in spreading awareness about physical fitness. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Fit India movement on the occasion of the National Sports Day.
