New Delhi, May 24, 2022: Kylian Mbappe, who signed a contract extension until 2025 with Paris St Germain (PSG) last week, has revealed that he had held talks about a move to Liverpool twice on two separate occasions in his career.
Mbappe’s transfer this summer was widely speculated to be a two-way battle between Real Madrid and PSG, but the Frenchman has also revealed that Liverpool was one of the clubs he spoke to before deciding to extend his stay at PSG. Incidentally, he had also met with the Premier League side in 2017 when he was still at Monaco.
“We talked a little bit, but not too much,” Mbappe told the Daily Telegraph. “I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her (Fayza Lamari).
“It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club. Of course, it was between Real Madrid and Paris St Germain in the end.”
Incidentally, Liverpool head coach Juergen Klopp had also said that the Merseyside club was interested in Mbappe and that there had been contact with the player.
“Of course we are interested in Kylian Mbappe, we are not blind.
“We like him and if you don’t like him then you have to question yourself. But, no, we are not, we cannot be part of these battles.
“There must be other clubs involved and that is fine. He is a great player,’ Klopp was quoted as saying.
Liverpool and Real will meet in Paris on May 28 in the Champions League final according to the reports published in indianexpress.com.
A lot of talk surrounding the Mbappe transfer saga has been around money and how he decided to stay put at the Parisian club due to the finances, and his demand for control of image rights.
Expressing regret over the reports, the 22-year-old said, “I am a little bit sad because since I played football I showed everybody that I have the passion to play,” Mbappé declares. “Every time people talk to me, I talk about football, I talk about titles, I talk about big games. I never talk about money. People can talk about whatever they want. But everyone who knows me… when I talked to Real Madrid, I talked to Paris Saint-Germain and I never talked money. Not once. I never talked money with Nasser.
“My lawyer did, my mum did for a few minutes. But not me. I talked about sport because it’s me on the pitch and I don’t count money in my account. I don’t care. I am here to win titles, to show I am the best and to be happy and I am happy right now.”
